Kuku to Turtle Bay

Beginning at the golf course beach at Makahoa Point stretching for 5 miles up and around coast to North Shore and Turtle Bay. Can walk, usually isolated and unvisited. Past north of the park, along Kahuku golf course wide and sandy, with many sand dunes. Avoid swimming, strong offshore current. Rest of shoreline for three quarters way to Turtle Bay consists of sand stretches with rocky out croppings. Shore bottom rocky. Beaches beautiful and isolated. Sand deep but not safe for swimming. Hanakailio Beach adjacent abandoned Kahuku airfield longest length of Sandy Beach area. Bare feet dangerous because of sharp mollusk, wear foot protection. Beyond Kahuku Point, Kaihalulu Beach at one mile in length - sandy, shoreline rocky reef. Halfway down the beach is a small protect pool. Around Kalaeokamanu Point there is Kuilima Cove (Turtle bay) where many people come to swim.

Kailua Beach Park

Large lawn area, shade trees, parking, life guard, calm waters. Off shore can see Popoia or Flat Island and Moku Lua Islands. Can paddle over there. Popular beach but usually not crowded during the week.

Waimanalo Beach

Stretches more than 3 miles around Waimanalo Bay. State beach parks around here all lined with ironwood trees, providing nice shade for picnics. Some waves.

Kailua Beach Park

Curving around from Mokapu Peninsula, Kailua Bay has white sand and turquoise waters. Turtles are common here and see a lot of windsurfers because of onshore winds.

Waimea Bay Beach Park

13 miles west of Laie on Hwy. 83. North shore, sand and reef beach, seasonal high surf. Picnicking, expert surfing and bodysurfing (currents); good snorkeling and swimming when calm. Lifeguard, phone, restrooms, showers. Wheelchair-accessible area, restrooms.Turtle Beach

Turtle Beach

got it's name because turtles can be seen sun bathing here at all hours of the day.

Directions: 2.3 miles from Waimea Bay coming from La'ie. You will see parking lot on the right, usually with plenty of cars parked there. The beach is across the road down to the right.

Sand Island State Recreation Area

At end of Sand Island access road, off Nimitz Hwy. (hwy 92) in Honolulu. 140 acres. South shore, seasonal high surf. Landscaped coastal park, small sand beach. Camping (permit required), fishing, picnicking, surfing, walking. Boat ramp, pavilion, phone, restrooms, night security. Wheelchair accessible area, restrooms, phones.

Sans Souci State Recreation Area

On Kalakaua Ave. between Kaimana Beach Hotel and War Memorial Natatorium in Waikiki. 1 acre. South shore beach popular for children due to relatively calm and shallow waters. Fishing (regulated), picnicking, board surfing, snorkeling, swimming. Lifeguard, phone. Wheelchair accessible. In 1988 an underwater marine park was designated next to Sans Souci from the War Memorial Natatorium to the Kapahulu Ave. Groin, near the Honolulu Zoo. No fishing allowed. Viewing of reef and near shore marine life, snorkeling, scuba diving.

Ulu Po Heiau State Monument

Off Kailua Rd. (Hwy 61) 0.4 mile northeast of Castle Hospital in Kailua. 8.3 acres. Viewing of Heiau ruins and Kawainui marsh.

Wa'ahila Ridge State Recreation

Area At end of Ruth Pl., via Peter St. from St. Louis Dr. off Wai'alae Ave. in St. Louis Heights, Honolulu. 49.9 acres. Nortfolk Island pine forest Hardy family hiking, picnicking.

Waimanalo Bay State Recreation Area

20 miles northeast of Honolulu airport via Pali Hwy. (Hwy 61), Kalaniana'ole Hwy. (Hwy. 72), and Aloiloi St., next to Bellows Air Force Base. 78.8 acres. Large sandy beach, windward shore, seasonal high surf; Picnicking, novice board surfing and bodysurfing, swimming. Phone, restrooms, night security.

Ala Moana Beach Park

In Honolulu, off Ala Moana (Hwy.92) between Kamakee St. and Atkinson Dr. South shore, sand and reef beach. 32 acres. Picnicking; good swimming, surfing. Bowling green, food, lifeguard, pavilion, phones, restrooms, showers, softball fields, tennis courts. Wheelchair-accessible area, parking, restrooms. View looks back to Waikiki, good sunset views, good place for picnics and swimming. On Fridays tradition where you can see colorful panorama of sails as boat race back to harbor.

Barbers Point Beach Park

20 miles west of Honolulu airport via H-1 and Hwy. 95 to end of Olai Rd. Leeward shore, seasonal high surf. Fair fishing, picnicking, surfing, swimming; good scuba. Phone, restrooms.

Bellows Beach Park

20 miles northeast of Honolulu airport via Pali Hwy. (Hwy.61) and Kalaniana'ole Hwy. (Hwy. 72), near Bellows Air Force Base. Windward-shore sand beach, seasonal high surf. Trailer and tent camping (weekends and holidays), picnicking, fair beginners; surfing, good bodysurfing, paipa surfing, swimming. Lifeguard (summers and weekends only), phone, restrooms, showers. Chun's Reef - Kawailoa

About 28 miles north of Honolulu airport off Hwy. 83. at Kawailoa Beach. North shore, surfing contest site. Fair swimming; good fishing, snorkeling, swimming. Phone. No facilities.

Ehukai Beach Park

About 7 miles north of Hale'iwa off Hwy. 83. North shore, sand and reef beach, seasonal high surf. Surfing contest and "Banzai Pipeline" site. Picnicking; expert surfing (currents, reef); good snorkeling, swimming when surf is flat. Lifeguard, phone, restrooms, showers.

Ewa Beach Park (Pu'uloa)

About 4 miles southeast of "Ewa off Hwy. 76. South shore, seasonal high surf. Picnicking, fair swimming, good beginners; surf. Phone restrooms, basketball and volleyball courts, softball field, children's play apparatus.

Hale'iwa Beach Park
